Handmade pillow covers
So here it is: first DIY home decor blog post after a looong time and a first handmade decoration I made for our new appartment in Berlin. After few busy weeks that I spent settling in the new job, meeting new people, figuring out all the formalities connected to registration proccess and basically getting lost in Berlin, I finally found some time to unpack my sewing machine. Since I had quite a long break since I’ve been using it for a last time, for the very beginning I decided for really simple piece of DIY. Here comes the effect: handmade pillow covers.
Sewing handmade pillow covers
To make your DIY handmade pillow you will need:
- 2 zippers
- tailor pins
- scissors, thread
- sewing machine or needle and two willing hands
If you now think “hm, I’ve seen this material before”, then you are right: I already used it to sew my handmade tube scarf. As you may have noticed I try not to waste any piece of fabrics. I was thinking about black and white covers to decorate living room for some time and this geometric-printed elastic fabrics just came in handy when I was browsing my wardrobe looking for tailor meter. Perfect!
Let’s move on to the sewing. First measure your pillows. For each pillow prepare two squares of fabrics of the same dimensions (if your material is extensible like mine), or a bit bigger to have some excess for the stitches (if it’s not).
Now turn the fabrics left, fold 1,5 cm inwards and use tailor pins to pin the zipper to the both squares. Sew it on your sewing machine.
Here is the stitched zipper. Left side:
And right side:
Now fold the squares right sides together and sew remaining 3 sides. Remember to open the zipper first so you could turn the cover right when you’re done.
This is it, the only step left is dressing your pillow up:
I made two covers. They match our grey sofa and grey pillows that we bought in Poco shop before. They make my favourite reading corner of the appartment much more cozy and comfortable. How do you like it?
