Northern Spain, part 1: Laredo, Bilbao and Gaztelugatxe

At the beginning of June 2017 we spent 6 days in beautiful, green and very rainy Northern Spain. After visiting Andalusia 8 months before, it was my second visit to Spain.  Here comes the first part of our fresh memories from Santander, Laredo and Basque Country: Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and San Sebastian.

Day 1 of northern Spain trip: Laredo beach

Ryanair flight from Schonefeld airport to Santander took 2,5 hour. We landed on a tiny airport and – as we were travelling with a hand luggage only – went straight to Europe Car when previously booked car was waiting.  I was a bit stressed as it was the first travel when I was supposed to drive but it turned out to be quite a nice experience. Laredo was the first goal on our travel map.

Recommended by Spanish friend, Laredo is a small town situated 30km from Santander, known for beautiful wide sandy beach. It was pretty amazing to walk in warm, shallow water with the view of high sandy dunes and smell of the sea and flowers blooming only a few hours after leaving the office in the middle of Berlin.

Having the first deep breath of spanish air we came back to car and moved to first city in Basque country: Bilbao Barakaldo. We stayed in suprisingly pleasent Ibis Budget.

Day 2: Bilbao, Basque Country

Bilbao is the biggest city of Basque Contry (Pais Vasco).  Hiding from a rain we visited nice Plaza Nueva and Old Town (Casco Viejo) with charming narrow streets and ate delicious ice-cream.

For a lunch we went to Mercado de la Ribera – nicely arranged market with plenty of local snacks, drinks, fresh vegetables, fruits, meat and fish. We had a typical spanish sandwiches (bocadillos)  and refreshing vermouth drink.

We have seen Guggenheim Museo in Bilbao only from the outside, it was pretty impressive. You need about 4 hours if you want to come in and see everything that museum offers, the price for adults’ ticket was 25 euro in June 2017. More into outside activities we decided for a short trip with kind of a railway named Funicular de Artxanda that took us to the top of Artxanda Mountain. Unfortunately rain and heavy fog made it impossible to admire the views.

From Bilbao we went to small town named Bakio where we stayed in Arimune – nicely arranged but empty hotel with the beautiful sea view and a bit creepy stuff following us with every step ;)

Day 3: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

There’s nothing better than being woke up by the sound of sea waves crashing the shore and even the rain preview couldn’t change our good moods! Right after the breakfast we left to see Gazeluxgatxe – beautiful spot with narrow stone stairs leading to the island with monastery at the top. We heard a lot about this place, amongst other that it was one of the shooting scenes for 7th series of Game of Thrones. We couldn’t wait to see it!

Unfortunately bad weather managed to disturb our sightseeing a bit – we got caught by the storm with thunders and lightning and really heavy rain in the halfway to the top. After 1 minute we were soaking wet and had to go back as it got almost impossible to move up in tight jeans and umbrellas broken by the wind. It was worth seeing anyway, I highly recommend visiting this place once you’re in Pais Vasco!

After reaching our car and changing clothes we moved to San Sebastian – probably the best known city in Northern Spain,  famous for great food, beautiful beaches and surfers, located only 20km west from France.
