Can you imagine that till July this year – except for 1 single event last summer – I haven’t been riding a bike since 1998? I didn’t have any accident or anything that could cause aversion towards bikes, just didn’t really feel the need to ride a bike. Last year I made counting and here it comes – almost 20 years not using a bike! As Berlin is just perfect for bike with it’s countless bike paths and it takes me around 40minutes to get from home to work by public transport (only 5,5km) I decided to give it a try and here it is! My perfect blue bike decorated with flowers and rattan basket. In this post I present how to make DIY bicycle basket lining but it’s there will probably be more posts on bike as I got pretty crazy about making it prettier :)
DIY bicycle basket lining – what you need
To make DIY bicycle basket lining same as mine you will need:
- big piece of cotton, mine is grey with white dots
- elastic lace to keep a basket lining in place, I got mine in at haberdashery in Warsaw
- erasable pen for materials
- ruler or tailor meter
- tailor pins
- scissors, sewing machine and threads of matching colors
Making DIY bicycle basket lining
First and most important step is to measure all walls of your basket precisely. I am quite impatient and did it too fast which is why I had to rip stitches twice (!), prepare new pieces of fabrics and sew again. On the photo below you can see that I made side walls trapezoid while front and back walls rectangular while they all should be trapezoid (you will see it cut correctly in one of the next photos).
Next step is to hem all parts of fabrics so it didn’t shred while sewing and using the lining. As I don’t have an overlock I used zigzac stitch on my Singer 8280 machine.
Now pin the bottom and the walls together and sew them on sewing machine.
When this step is done pin the walls together and again sew them together.
Now we need to fold the top of fabrics outwards twice and quilt it for an aesthetic finish.
Time for hemming the lining with elastic lace. To do it please measure the basket’s circuit where the lining will end. Remember to stretch it so lace could handle keeping the lining in place.
Pin the lace to the lining’s edge and stitch it using sewing machine, stretching the lace while sewing.
Yep, this is it!
DIY bicycle basket lining
To give my bike more summery look I wrapped handlebar with pink flowers from Amazon. It may seem quite trashy but reflects my bohemian soul perfectly and I get super happy everytime I look at it ;)) I do not only get to work faster (20-25 minutes now instead of 40) but also make everyday exercise without effort. Isn’t it a perfect deal?
If you also are crazy with your bike please share it with me – photo or link in the comment will do as I am still looking for inspiration! Thank you, have a wonderful summer week!
